“Most people die of a sort of creeping common sense, and discover when it is too late that the only things one never regrets are one’s mistakes.” – Oscar Wilde
Mistakes. We all make them. It’s only human. But the most dreaded question people love asking each other, “Do you regret your past mistakes?” Well, my answer to that would be yes. But doesn’t everyone? It’s the very basic truth. We all regret something that we’ve done something in the past . But there is one thing people tend to ignore. The decisions were taken by me. Yes, at certain moments we are always under someone’s influence, but the final decision is always ours. You have to take your chances and see where life takes you. We spend hours, day and night, thinking of the things that might have happened if we had chosen the other option. The strangest thing is that no one dares to dwell on the decision that has already been taken! Maybe life could’ve been better if you had chosen something else for yourself, but what if it led to something worse? Won’t you regret your decision then? We often hear people say, ‘Oh I wish I didn’t do that. Things would’ve been so different today!’ And those two words – What if. Let’s contemplate these words. Do you really mean that? How can you be so sure that your life would’ve been different? If you’re going to regret either of the decisions, whether you make them or not, then might as well choose whatever you want to! There will always be two roads and you will have to choose either one. And if you choose the first one, you won’t know what the other one would be like. We will always have to give up on at least one option to reach our goal.
I think the most beautiful thing about life is that it is uncertain – not being aware of what is yet to come. Do you really want to know what is going to be your life for the next 50 years? Doesn’t that make life too predictable? You’ll be aware of what is going to take place for the rest of your life. Isn’t that too boring? Doesn’t it change the whole notion of life as we know it? It’s about making mistakes, learning from them, and moving on in life. That’s what makes us different. So what if you said something or did something wrong? There are people who spend their entire lives just regretting things…or not being to do what they wanted to do because of the fear of other. Those ‘other’ people aren’t here now, are they? Then why fear them? I believe life isn’t an art that we have to perfect. No. It’s the process of falling down ten times to get back up eleven times.
Thinking about your past ruins your present as well as your future. It can also be said that you are scarring your future with things that have gone by. Okay, so you took a decision and you regret it and you’ll do anything to travel back in time (even build a time machine) and change the situation. But since that is not possible (obviously), why are you wasting your present thinking about that? What’s done is done. You can only live with the consequences and try to make the best of that situation. To put it in quite simple terms, get over it! Nobody wants to listen to your sad story, all people look at is what you’ve made of yourself despite taking bad decisions. Life isn’t a fairytale. It’s about the choices you make, the decisions you take, the mistakes you make and the experience you gain.
As Kelsey Grammer says, ”Apologizes are pointless, regrets come too late, what matters is that you can move on, you can grow”. We are here to make mistakes. Nobody in this world is born perfect. There is not a single person who does not regret his/her past. Even your idols, people you admire, celebrities – they all have their share of regrets.
When you’re lying on your deathbed, you won’t be thinking about the possibilities of what could’ve been. Instead, there will be a parade of memories and all the things you did that made you happy. Life shouldn’t be lived on other’s terms. It is your life. It’s what you make of it. When you look back at your life, all you see are the wrong decisions you’ve made. Accept the fact that you are human! Making mistakes is basically our right! If we do not make mistakes, how will we get an understanding of life? Maybe it’s high time now that we start concentrating on the brighter side of life. Accept all the decisions you have taken, all the mistakes you’ve made. Do try it; it will leave you with a beautiful experience – life.
“We all do things we desperately wish we could undo. Those regrets just become part of who we are, along with everything else. To spend time trying to change that, well, it’s like chasing clouds.”
― Libba Bray
