Cameron Russell, a model, in her TED Talks session pointed out: “Looks aren’t everything. Believe me, I’m a model.”
My reaction: “Duh! It’s easy for you to say. You are after all a model!”
Well, I guess I may not be alone in this reaction. Lot of us would react the same way. Come on! She has a tall, slim figure and pretty face. It’s easier for her to say looks doesn’t matter after having the entire package. But for some of us the grass is not that green.
It is basically proven that good looks come in handy lot many times. A very interesting research by the researchers at the Leuphana University of Luneberg in Northern Germany admits that wages, promotions and perks at work are directly proportional to a person’s attractiveness. It sounds ridiculous to me but the research was based on real life experiences of 3,000 people. One of the researchers pointed out that only one point above average in the attractiveness scale increases the chance of employment by 3 percent! Well, that’s something!
There was a time when I would have called this study as being offensive. But now I think I would refrain from doing that. I was once fat with too much oil on my skin. I had trouble going out with my friends as they looked like Snow White and I, one of the dwarfs! Then I realized that maybe putting more thought into my appearance is one of the easiest ways to improve my social prospects and the way people see me. Well honestly speaking, we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover or a person by his/her looks. But let’s face the harsh reality of today’s world: we all do it! Basically when we meet someone for the first time, it’s the person’s appearance that initiates our fondness for them. Well eventually we come across other things that alleviate our fondness level for the person but initially it is the outer appearance always.
In today’s over-competitive world, with stallions running all around you, standing out as a Black Beauty is the only way to stand out and be remembered. Nowadays, making a lasting impression is the single most talent that needs to be acquired in life. A considerable amount of people force themselves to believe that “I don’t care what people think of me.” But deep down, trust me, you do care. I know this as I was one of those people. Though I tried hard to keep the pledge that I wouldn’t care about my looks but every other day I find myself standing in front of the mirror and trying out multiples hairstyles!
Let’s face it. We don’t just want to be attractive for other people. Sometimes, looking good gives us a pleasure that cannot be defined through words. It makes us confident and gives us courage to storm into the world and make a place for ourselves. It motivates us to be socially active and even increases our social circle which in today’s world is quite essential. So long story short, looking good makes us feel good and feeling good makes us more productive, competitive and energetic in everything we do. Self-confidence is an essential flavor in the salad of success in life. And looking good and feeling good is one of the easiest ways to attain it.
Another important thing is the way you dress. Have you ever thought why you are asked to wear formals and look clean when you go out for an interview? The way you dress speaks a lot about you. You should be dressing in a way that makes you look important. Every corporate office has a dress code. When you dress for success, you give out a positive vibe that you want to be someone great and give out creditability.
When you take time to improve your appearance, it makes you a meticulous person in the eyes of others. Carelessness in dressing and the way you look makes you look like a negligent person. That might spread a negative vibe in your career. It might even stall the chances of a promotion or a big break you have been waiting for. The research I talked about earlier doesn’t look ridiculous now!
Looking good doesn’t mean that you have to look like those models that on the covers of fashion magazines. A few simple steps would take you there. Start with your skin. Make it look radiant and bring the glow that’s been missing for a long time now. That doesn’t mean you have to be friends with your make-up kit! Eat fruits, green leafy vegetables and remain hydrated all the time. Get a haircut that suits you. Next is your body. Burn the extra useless fat and trim yourself to a good shape. Shower everyday and keep yourself dirt-free. That would protect your skin too. Brush your teeth well so that you can flash them when you smile. Then hit the mall and update your wardrobe. Don’t go for anything too revealing thinking that it would make you look attractive. It does that with a negative vibe and trust me it’s not helpful. Mix, match and accessorize your items. Now stand in front of the world and show the wonderful, smart and confident you!
