“And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.”
– Roald Dahl
Magic is all around us,by this I don’t mean the kinds we have read in Harry Potter chanting some complex spell with a wand and floating a stick in the air nor the one we have grown up seeing in birthday parties. It is not all the card tricks, pigeons vanishing and appearing again from their cages or people disappearing in a cupboard and turning up on the otherside. For me magic is as simple as a smile on someone’s face. It is that elated look on someone’s face and the warmth that spreads in my heart. Magic is turning a frown into a smile, a smile into a grin and a grin into laughter. For me magic does exist with no doubt, when there are rainbows and wild flowers, the music of the wind, the silence of the stars and finding your soul mate in this world full of strangers. Anyone who has loved has been touched by magic.
I asked my doctor if he believes in magic, this is what he replied saying- “There is no such thing as magic as far as we know. And while as surgeons,we study the secrets behind the human body’s intricate network of cells, tissues and organs, when things go wrong, horribly wrong there are only so many tricks we have up our sleeves to put a body back together. But there is a kind of power more of a spell really. And when we get it right,it can be pretty damn magical and when we do feel somewhere in some place magic does exist.”
We all live such busy lives that there is no time to ponder over our thoughts especially if they are not related to our work, finance and politics. But take a minute and think about that smiling face in the crowd you passed earlier, you’ll find yourself smiling too. Let me share my moment of discovering magic with you ,one day I was travelling by rickshaw on my way back home and waiting for the light to turn green, just then I saw a little girl not more than 6-7 years old trying to drink water from a water tanker however after a couple of failed attempts she turned with a sad face to go back. In a split second I called her and offered her my bottle of water, the smile on her face, the twinkle in her eyes was a magical moment for me.The thought of her still makes me smile and I wonder how our humble gestures and reflective actions can make someone happy, can create Magic. It is such a simple and such an extraordinary part of the lives we live.
Obviously, to each his own magic. For me magic is in morning dew on the leaves,it is a mother knowing a cry of hunger,of pain and of tantrums,it is in bumping in a long lost friend, it is in playing a cupid for friends,it is in a melody,it is in seeing your child take his first step,it is when your child says Ma and Pa,it is in giving your mother your first pay cheque,it is in nursing a sick friend and not going to work, it is in giving your share of chocolate to your little brother and the grin that follows, there is magic in dancing in those first rains and in spreading happiness in this world by little things you do.
“That’s the thing about magic; you’ve got to know it’s still here, all
around us, or it just stays invisible for you.”
– Charles de Lint
Isn’t this quote so apt for those who don’t believe in magic, has it ever happened that you hum a song and next thing you know its playing on the radio. You remember a friend and he gives you a call exactly at that moment. You crave for pakodas and your mother has cooked it for dinner without you uttering a word. You want a book desperately and your friends gift it to you.
You may call all of this mere coincidence but I call it magic of life.
The greatest magic in this world is of a mother giving birth to her child, ushering a new life on this earth. After all the pain she goes through she still manages to smile when she looks at her child, she feels warmth spread in her body and heart because LIFE IS MAGIC.
A smile here,a giggle there and laughter everywhere is the sound of magic. You don’t need to go looking for magic in castles all you need to do is hug a friend, share your lunch with a colleague far away from home, share a cup of tea with your watchman on a chilly night and just say thank you to those who do something for you, you will create magic.
