Have you smoked because of being stressed? Wanted to? Or saw your friend/ family or peers doing the same?
As the world is getting more complexly connected and the day to day activities of an individual is increasing year after year, just to achieve the so called perfect lifestyle we find ourselves in the middle of many issues and problems, be it mental emotional or physical. An individual for whom 24 hours in a day is not enough, cannot devote it’s time to solve the various issues concerning his life and hence always chooses the short cut to get rid of the stress or the anxiety. Most common of them all is smoking.
It’s a common sight that people or the youth of today is found smoking at a near by joint, streets, near college, smoking zones wherever you pass by. Some say they smoke because of anxiety, some say they smoke because it gives them a sense of belonging-ness to the crowd or some smoke because they are too addicted to it. Even after knowing it’s side effects from various advertisements, social media and society they cease to leave the habit of smoking.
Study after study shows a link between smoking and a host of health problems, including heart diseases and cancer. 1 in 10 adults -more than five million per year dies from tobacco-related illnesses. Peer pressure, anxiety, social reward, parental influence ,mis-information,advertising and stress relief are some common factors which contribute to smoking.
If a child in a social circle starts experimenting with tobacco, it’s all too easy for him or her to lead peers into smoking as well. The smoker doesn’t want to be alone, and the not-yet-smokers don’t want to be seen as afraid to try something risky or boundary-pushing. Which brings risk taking behaviour as a factor contributing to smoking as well. Some people even say that smoking helps them to relax. One of the shortcomings of the modern culture - the lack of adequate relaxation also contributes to smoking.
Many of the people not only do not know how to relax, but do not take time to learn. Smoking helps them to relax because it gives them a legitimate excuse to linger a little longer after meals, to stop work for a few minutes, to sit at home without doing anything that requires effort. The restful effect of moderate smoking explains why people working under great stress use more tobacco.
Some people say that smoking literally helps to shut out distractions and they cannot think or even write, without smoking . For some smoking is fun,and they find it a psychological pleasure.
For some, smoking is essentially a way to self-medicate for tension and pain. Even people suffering from some form of mental illness, such as depression or anxiety disorders, take up smoking because it can helps them mitigate some of their symptoms.
But as is the case with many powerful drugs, using nicotine to manage medical conditions comes with a host of negative side effects. Not just addiction, smoking causes cancer and many chronic diseases. Lung cancer, coronary heart disease, strokes, asthma and early death is caused by the cigarette you might be holding or you see your peers smoke every day.
Not just the people who smoke get affected, but also the people around such smokers, known as the ‘passive smokers’ who inhale the smoke get affected by the same diseases.
One should realize that an addiction like smoking may give a short time stress relief but gives a long time side effect.
When a person quits smoking the cardiovascular risks cut down great deal.
It’s a fact that just one year after quitting smoking, risk of heart attack drops sharply. Just within 2 to 5 years of quitting smoking, the risk of stroke falls about the same as non smokers. If a person quits smoking, risks for cancers of the mouth, throat, esophagus, and bladder drop by half within 5 years and ten years after someone quits smoking, risk for lung cancer drops by half.
After years of use it sometimes brings smokers to a point where they feel like changing for good,or by their family and friends’ persuasion they finally give in to change the habit and get rid of it.
A person can always follow simple steps to get rid of such a dangerous addiction by distracting one self from the urge of smoking, investigating when the person actually feels like smoking and then working on that issue. Having dietary adjustments and smoking aids or nicotine gums helps in curbing the urge of smoking. Having people to support one in this transition always helps. If not, then rewarding one self by achieving short term targets of avoiding smoking–say ‘did not smoke for 5 days at a stretch’, helps in motivating a person to move ahead and for good.
Social media is full of ways to get rid of this habit which can be used to curb the addiction to smoking. One has to just be strong willed enough to change his/her life for good.
Remember, a cigarette takes away 6 minutes of your life. you can always channelize your energy into something productive which would benefit you.
One should not blow his life away in smoke.
